Investigative Study on the Status of Maternal and Child Health in Urban Area of Taegu City and Rural Area of Kyungsan Gun(County), Korea

Abstract
In order to investigate the present status of the Family Planning and Maternal and Child Health in both urban and the rural areas in Korea, I have studied from June to August of 1967, on these subjects in respect to the age of married women, marrying age, educational levels, religions, number of children, living standard, gravidity and abortion, assistance for labor, infant feeding and weaning, contraception practice and its methods among the married women. Taegu City and Kyungsan Gun were studied as investigating urban and ural areas respectively.
The results obtained were summarized as follows:
1. Age of Married Women:
The most common range of distribution was 3539 year group in urban area: 3034 year group in aural area.
2. Marrying Age:
The most common marrying age distribution was 2324 year group in urban area and 19~ 20 year group in rural area repectively.
3. Educational Levels:
There were no background of education in 4% of marred women and 24% of the married women was above 10th grade educational level in urban area while 23.2% of married women we-re of no education and 2.2% of merried women was above ,10th grade in rural area.
4. Religions:
About 50% of married women in urban area and 70% of those in rural area were unbelievers but there were no significant difference in the distribution of believers between urban and rural area and it was in the order of the Buddist, the protestant, and the Catholic.
5. Gravidity:
The mast common gravidity for each married women was 3 in urban area; 5 in rural area; and the average was 3.5 in urban area and 4.2 in rural.
6. Numbers of Living Children:
Two children per mother in urban area and four in rural area were the most common.
7. Numbers of Living Sons:
The commonest numbers of living sons for each mother was 1 in urban area and 2 in rural area. The average number of it was 1.7 in urban area and 1.9 in rural area.
8. Rate of Abortion:
The spontaneous abortion rate was 12% and there was no significant difference between urban and rural area while there was much higher incidence of induced abortion in urban area than in rural.
9. Assistant for Labor:
In urban area, about the half of total labor was assisted by the specialist such as physicianor midwife. In rural area, however, only about 6% of labors was assisted by the specialist.
10. Infant Feeding:
In urban area, 82.7% was breast feeding and 12.6 % vras mixed feeding while in rural area it was mostly breast feeding (94.5%)
11. Weaning:
The percentage of children weaned before 1 1%2 years o;~d was 53.6% in urban area and 22.2 0 in rural area and those after 2 years old was 14.2; i:n urban area and 34.9% in rural area.
12. Number of Deaths among Per-School Children:
About 17% of mothers had their children dead during ~~re-school age in urban area and 37% of mothers had their children dead during pre-school age in rural area.
13. Contraception Practice:
About one-thirds of married women had accepted contraception practice in both areas of urban and rural.
14. Methods of Contraception Practice by Current Users:
There were various methods of family planning in urban area; I. U. D. 31.3%; condom method 21.8%; oral pills 19.1%. In rural area I. U. D. was the most common method in contraception practice (61.3%).
